Ranches of the West Inc. :: For Love and Money
Reid is one of the west’s most knowledgeable authorities on Conservation Easements.  With a mission to create and maintain sustainable resources, the land and goals of each client his firm consults with poses a unique challenge and opportunity for preservation, enhancement and stewardship of the land and its natural resources.  He has worked closely for over 20 years with organizations such as the Nature Conservancy, The Montana Land Reliance and The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

His upcoming book, For Love and Money and the companion workbook Green for Green, available from Rockin SR Publishing in Spring 2009,  gives practical advice on the way in which conservation easements can protect the land in perpetuity from development, provide tax benefits to the land owner,  preserve
precious natural resources, green space and a way of life to be valued and enjoyed by future generations.

Manfield, if you think you are impatiently awaiting For Love and Money, just think how I feel after having the idea germinate over 10 or so years (smile). In specific answer to your query, I and my publisher are shooting for a spring release of both the book and the work book.  I must admit that they are on time, and I am behind schedule, though making progress.  I do believe we will make the spring deadline, maybe around April, give or take a few weeks. Between the book, and the associated workbook, which I believe (with some bias) will prove extremely valuable to users/readers, it is quite the undertaking, but I am thoroughly enjoying just about every minute of it.

Thank you Misha. Your kudos on the site should be shared with my web master, and are.  I think, in many ways the book will be even more fun, since it will be so anecdotal in nature.  And I guarnatee that many of those "teach by example" stories are funny, and fun, as well as being informative.

Hi Lyle. Good question, and one that I answered in some detail in responses to these blogs on another site which right now are in the process of being transferred to this one.  So check back in a few days for some pretty good general answers to certain of your queries.  As to the book, yes, there wil be an indepth discussion of these easements, some great real life anecdotes,  case studies, and the very specific information you are also looking for as to reccomended Grantees (outfits that accept the easements).  In general, each Grantee has as a primary focus a specific conservation goal.  For instance the Elk Foundation is most interested in habitat, particularly winter range, for ungulates (elk, deer, etc).  Trout Unlimited focuses on riparian health and of course stream habitat,  the Conservancy on flora and fauna, and so forth.

Does this book list the conservation groups available?  And which ones are most likely to be the friendliest to work with?  I, for one, don't have any idea how to approach a group or present an idea or even what the parameters are for conservation easements.  And are the regulations different for each state or each group?
